When I was entrusted by Payame Noor University with the task of preparing a collection of prose specimens in the form of the short story. it did not take me long to come up with the idea of bringing together the most beautiful stories I have read by the authors who are outstanding in the world of letters.

Having made the decision, I set to locating English short stories in the printed works of literature to which I could gain access. In my rereading the stories, I realized that some of them, because of their everlasting emotional impact, stood in relief in my memory; some others, though marked excellent in passing I may say that ever since in the past I have always had the tendency to express my response to what I had been reading), were just a blur…the silhouettes of great achievements against my dim memory. I, therefore, had to read them again in order to refresh my memory about them. I found it a rewarding task as it offered me the chance of experiencing and sharing the agonies and ecstacies of the personae of the narratives–people who happen to be speaking of man’s joys, sorrows, hopes, despairs…..
