(مقدمه) Preface
A short story is one of the most popular forms of literature. Even though it is fiction, you may become interested in reading it because it deals with people, places, actions, and events that seem familiar. This process has no rival in its power to create natural reflection on language and how it works. So a short story, as the product of author’s imagination, makes it an accessible source for anyone considering the development of reading and appreciation of literature. It offers several unique features to help the students become active readers.
This new book of Short Stories for Oral Reproduction is intended to provide material for a number of approaches to help the students to find their way into the meaning and pleasure of a story. Each section in this book opens with a short story and also includes a set of strategies for effective reading and oral reproduction, the strategies involve the reader in the text. In order to avoid the distraction of an unfamiliar vocabulary, each new word is written in bold type and is explained where it appears. We know that involvement and reaction are necessary if the students are to learn. This approach provides a background to enhance comprehension and motivate the students for further activities.
Exercises at the end of each section are designed to encourage a constructive response and productive discussion. The exercises include pronunciation, word guessing, cloze sentences, sentence creation, analyzing, understanding and story completion. These activities focus more attention on production and inference in students’ tasks. The variety of exercises adds versatility to the texts.
The list of books which has been consulted and drawn upon, is appended at the end, and I acknowledge my indebtedness to their respective authors and publishers. I have also provided short biographical sketches on each short story writer mentioned in the book.
It is hoped that the book will prove useful to university students of various fields, especially those majoring in English.
